About The Area

Cumbria is predominantly rural and with less than 500,000 people. It has the second lowest population density among English counties, and has only five towns with a population of over 20,000.

The Lake District National Park forms the centre of Cumbria and is considered one of England's most outstanding areas of natural beauty, serving as inspiration for artists, writers, and musicians.

Much of the Lake District National Park is mountainous, and it contains every peak in England over 3,000 feet (910 m) above sea level, with Scafell Pike 3,209 feet (978 m) being the highest point of England.

The area is also a magnet for walkers, climbers, cyclists and canoeists as well as those who just want to marvel at the landscape.

The National Park comprises a central mountainous core with the major lakes (called Tarns or Water) radiating out from the centre like the spokes of a wheel.

To the North of Cumbria is the Scotish Borders and to the East the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Different areas of the National Park have different characters all beautiful and all a perfect place to see or do something different.
